It surely has been an odd year - who knows what will be normal from here on in. I think that is one of the main issues - "What is normal" may not be relevant during this turbulent time.
We have noticed that some things simply didn't get going due to the cold soil. Everything is growing like crazy at the moment but it a long, long way behind. Funny enough though, the only thing that did get going early was the tomatoes, pumpkins and squash. Can't figure that one out. Doesn't make any logical sense to me at all and the things that didn't start well here are the brassica's (which should). The deciduous trees are confused as to what season it actually is as well. From such a season, many plants that would have grown have not, the insect movement has been totally different as well. Nature is in a turmoil.
I agree that we will need to look at being very versatile and prepared if we wish to grow a constant supply of food. Bringing things on in a hot house seems a definite for this area and also being prepared for possible extremes of hot weather as well.
It seems we are in for a rough ride and will need to be very adaptable and in tune to the environment to ride it through.
